Day Passes Two Bills Out of the House

Jefferson City – Anytime a legislator passes a piece of legislation out of their respective chamber, it is considered a very good day for them. When the rare occurrence of a legislator passing two pieces of legislation on the same day happens, it is an exceptional one. That is exactly what Rep. David Day (R-Dixon) did today.
“I am grateful to the legislature for their support of both of these bills” Day said. “Both of these pieces of legislation are aimed at honoring our nation’s heroes, one by making sure the honors and medals they received will be available to them or their family when located, the other making sure that their final wishes are carried out by who they entrusted that duty with.”
Rep. Day was successful in passing both HB 1745 and HB 1208 out of the House of Representatives today. HB 1745 is a bill that will allow military medals to remain in the name of the owner or the owner’s family when they are considered unclaimed property by the Missouri Treasurer’s Office. Currently, after a period of time those medals are sold and the money put in an account to be given to the individual or their family if located. This legislation will allow those medals to be kept until the rightful owner or family members are located. Until that time, they may be used for displays or kept in storage.
The other bill passed by Rep. Day today was HB 1208. This legislation will allow the State of Missouri to recognize Dept. of Defense Form 93, which names who is responsible for the remains of an active duty military member in the event of death. Currently Missouri does not recognize DD Form 93 and there can be conflicts between the wishes of the military member and state law, this legislation will remove that conflict.
“I was proud to work with the Treasurer’s Office on HB 1745 and the Department of Defense on HB 1208” continued Day. “I look forward to working with the Senate in moving these two pieces of legislation forward and on to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
Representative Day has been named Legislator of the Year by both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War and currently serves as Chairman of the House Veterans Committee.
