Speaker Richard Appoints Rep. David Day to Committee

Charged with Exploring Ways to Reduce the Size of Government

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.State Rep. David Day, R-Dixon, will spend the interim working with the members of a newly-formed committee to find ways to reduce the size of state government. Day was appointed this week to the Joint Interim Committee on Reducing the Size of State Government by House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin.

“Rep. Day is committed to keeping the size of government at a reasonable level and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used in the most responsible manner possible. I know the committee will benefit immensely from his contributions,” said Richard.

The joint committee was created by Senate Concurrent Resolution 54, which passed through the Missouri General Assembly during the 2010 legislative session. The committee is charged with examining each state department and agency to determine programs or bureaucracies that can be eliminated or reduced, and to identify inefficient and unnecessary use of state funds. Committee members have until Dec. 31, 2010 to make final recommendations to the House Budget Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to serve on a committee with such an important goal. We worked hard this year to create a balanced budget and next year the task will be even tougher. It’s imperative that we look at long term solutions that will save taxpayer dollars,” said Day. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to find common sense solutions that will ensure our state government serves the people of Missouri in the most fiscally responsible manner possible.”

‘President Reagan once said “Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth.”  My hope is that we work together to make sure that is not the case in Missouri as we look at departments and various programs the state runs.  If a program is working as intended and receiving good results, great.  However, if one isn’t, then it should be examined more closely and tough decisions made if needed’ concluded Day.

Day joins Reps. Sally Faith, Ryan Silvey and Rick Stream as majority party members of the committee. House minority party members and Senate members have yet to be appointed.  The committee must issue a report to the legislature by the end of this year.
